LAFAYETTE, La. – Wonderful smile. Unwavering source of optimism. Compassionate caregiver. Always willing to lend a hand.

These are just some of the phrases coworkers and others who have had the honor of knowing Mary Broussard have used to describe this longtime, cherished member of the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Social Services Department.

Now, they have a new title for Mary: LSU School of Social Work Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for the 1970s. She is one of 75 Distinguished Alumni to be recognized during the school’s 75th anniversary celebration on April 19 in the Lod Cook Alumni Center at LSU in Baton Rouge. One Distinguished Alum will be named for each of the school’s decades since its founding in 1937.

“The LSU School of Social Work received over 15 nominations on Mrs. Mary’s behalf. Each nomination highlights her outstanding dedication to the field of social work and to the patients and families she serves on a daily basis here at Women’s & Children’s Hospital,” said Ruth Evans, Director of Social Services and Case Management for the Regional Medical Center of Acadiana and Women’s & Children’s Hospital, a campus of Regional Medical Center.

“We are so proud of Mrs. Mary and honored to have her on our social work team,” Evans continued. “No one deserves this award more than her.”

Recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award must be a graduate of the LSU School of Social Work, have an outstanding professional record, demonstrate distinguished service to the profession and reflect the values and ethics of the social work profession.
