LAFAYETTE, La. – The team of pediatric specialists at the Kids Specialty Center welcome a Board-Certified Pediatric General Surgeon to the team.
Dr. Dee Garrett joins the staff at the Kids Specialty Center and the staff at Women’s & Children’s Hospital this month after completing a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland.
“I chose pediatric surgery because I am able to definitively take care of surgical problems in children. Most of our patients only need one operation in their lives that at the time can be life-saving,” Dr. Garrett said. “I am blessed to be in Lafayette and I look forward to taking great care of our children.”
Dr. Garrett is practicing with Dr. Kenneth Falterman. Their office is located in the Kids Specialty Center, 4704 Ambassador Caffery Parkway.
“We are excited to have a physician of this caliber join the team at the Kids Specialty Center and Women’s & Children’s Hospital,” said Kathy Bobbs, CEO of Women’s & Children’s Hospital. “Dr. Dee Garrett’s skill and personal approach to patient care make her a welcome addition to the wide array of services we currently provide.”
A Lafayette native, Dr. Garrett earned her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania and later obtained a doctorate in Genetics from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She performed her surgery residency at Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans and went on to complete a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery in Los Angeles. Dr. Garrett completed a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland and a separate fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Northwestern University in Chicago.
Dr. Garrett has published numerous research papers regarding minimally invasive surgery in pediatric patients. Her choice to specialize in pediatric surgery is a personal one.
“As a child, I was diagnosed with scoliosis. My orthopedic surgeon always involved me in my care by showing me my X-rays and talking directly to me about the importance of wearing my brace. He was very kind,” she explained.
That experience made Dr. Garrett determined to be personal in her approach to treating children and addressing the needs of their families, she said.
“I like to spend as much time as it takes,” Dr. Garrett said, “to make sure my families understand the medical condition and the surgical procedure.”
Dr. Garrett’s office is located in the Kids Specialty Center at 4704 Ambassador Caffery Pkwy., Lafayette. For appointments call 337-371-3101 or 1-877-302-2731.
