Women's & Children's Leaders Manage a Little Fun

LAFAYETTE, La. - The summer sun is unforgiving in Acadiana, but Women's & Children's Hospital leaders still managed to have a little fun recently with area youth.

Directors and managers from the hospital, located at 4600 Ambassador Caffery Parkway, participated in the annual United Way Day of Caring on June 21 by visiting Thomas Park Recreation Center.

There, they spent most of the day with 40 boys ages 5 to 8, using books and activities to teach basic gardening and the difference between good and bad food choices. Hospital leaders first read two books on each subject to the children, then incorporated the tips into a fun activity.

"We helped them plant tomato plants in individual planters for the gardening piece," said Dedra Ashy, Women's & Children's Hospital Health Information Management Director, who organized the hospital's participation in the community-wide event. "It gave them something to take home, so they can watch their plant grow."
