PLAYday Returns to Women’s & Children’s

Hey, moms and dads, summer is fast approaching. Have ideas on how to keep your kids active and off the couch? Want some?

PLAYday 2016 is just the ticket you’re looking for.

Set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9 on the grounds of the Kids Specialty Center, located on the Women’s & Children’s Hospital campus at 4600 Ambassador Caffery Parkway, PLAYday 2016 will feature a football toss, fun jumps, an obstacle course, exercise demonstrations, summer camp information and much more.

Special presentations by pediatric specialists with the Kids Specialty Center at Women’s & Children’s Hospital include:

  • 10:15 a.m.: “Pediatric Surgery 101,” Dr. “Dee” Garrett, pediatric general surgeon
  • 11:15 a.m.: “What Can I Do Today to Prevent My Child from Developing Type 2 Diabetes,” Leslie Fontenot, diabetes educator
  • 12:15 p.m.: “How to Protect Your Fabulous Brain,” Dr. Ann Marie Flannery, pediatric neurosurgeon

And the best part: There is no cost to attend. The event is open to the public. Families, especially those with children in grades Pre-K to 5, are encouraged to attend together to enjoy the various activities and learn as a family about ways to have fun this summer while staying away from the common pitfalls of video games, television and high-calorie snacks.

The annual event is presented by Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Center, or SWLAHEC, and Women’s & Children’s Hospital. More than 20 area organizations are on tap to participate and offer information on summer camps and other activities for Acadiana children to help them have a happier, healthier summer. Other presentations include healthy snacking and eating habits and better alternatives to sodas and heavy-sugar drinks.

Free snacks and water will be available. Other food options will be available for sale, so families can plan to spend the four hours enjoying all the activities without having to worry about leaving the event to grab lunch.
