LAFAYETTE, La. – Good things come to those who wait … and work for them.
Dr. Gabriel Dersam, Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon with the Kids Specialty Center at Women’s & Children’s Hospital, recently became Board Certified as an Orthopedic Surgeon by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
The achievement makes Dr. Dersam the only Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon in Acadiana who specializes in the treatment of pediatric patients.
“Board certification is something parents look for in a physician,” Dr. Dersam explained, “because it signifies that you have proven to leaders in your field that you have a proven record of quality outcomes.”
Dr. Dersam specializes in the treatment of bone fractures, club foot, hip dysplasia, cerebral palsy and other pediatric musculoskeletal problems patients formerly had to travel to Baton Rouge, New Orleans or further to have treated.
Dr. Dersam earned a medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine before completing a residency at the University of Minnesota and a fellowship in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at Gillett Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. In 2008, he joined the Kids Specialty Center team of physicians, who specialize in various pediatric services including General Surgery, Endocrinology, Hematology/Oncology, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine.
To achieve board certification, Dr. Dersam was required to practice for several years and gather information about treatments and surgeries he performed. Dr. Dersam completed a written exam in July and later stood before a panel of six Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeons, who questioned him about techniques he used to treat his patients.
“It’s a rigorous process for a reason,” Dr. Dersam said. “It’s a form of quality control for our industry, to ensure patients are getting the best care possible.”
